Personally I believe in manual labor to learn the basics. The only exception is if you have an autoguider you will need software to control your mount for that. The firmware in your goto mount has everything you need to get started. The good news is that for those who just want to try AP with a DSLR without having to deal with software: You need no software at all. Is there any beginner who still dares to try AP after this?
